The Colonial Story

Joe and GirlIt is with pride and pleasure that we share our family history with you.  Simon Anderson, whose father died when we has 12 years old, went to work to help suppurt his mother and family.

In 1901, he purchased a milk route in St. Charles, Illinois for $100.  Having the normal challenges of owning a business, he developed a philosophy of Quality and Freshness that has become the standard in the dairy industry.  His milk business soon developed into a full dairy, complemented by ice cream production.

In the 1930's Simon was joined by his three sons, Paul, Warren and Joe K.  Together they opened several ice cream and dairy stores throughout the western suburbs, as far east as Elmhurst, north to Elgin and Dundee, south to Aurora, as well as St. Charles and Geneva.  Most of these stores were operated until World War II, when Colonial concentrated only on the dairy and ice cream production.

Again, Colonial went into the retail business in 1958.  This time food was added to the menu with our Colonial's delicious ice cream.  These ice cream food shops have expanded through the years, growing into full service restaurants.  Each restaurant has its own unique personality, reflecting our desire for a relaxing and pleasurable atmosphere tailored to each community.

Today, Colonial ice cream is also available in supermarkets, drugstores and restaurants throughout the western suburbs of Chicago.

We are proud of the "Colonial Family Team," comprised of conscientious and dedicated people that continue the tradition of friendly, courteous service.  Now in the fourth generation of the Anderson family, Colonial Cafe continues the tradition established by Simon Anderson.
